Since launching in November 2022, Optima Living’s Co-op Program has quickly become an enriching and valuable opportunity for students seeking hands-on experience in the seniors living industry. Under the dedicated leadership of Simran Sandhu, Manager, HR Special Programs, the program has grown rapidly, welcoming students from UBC, SFU, BCIT, and Langara College. A Program on the Rise
In just two years, Optima Living’s Co-op Program has grown from four students in Spring 2023 to an impressive twelve in late 2024. This growth reflects both the students’ value and Optima Living’s commitment to providing real-world learning and mentorship across various functions, including Marketing, Business Analysis, HR, Projects, IT, Data Analysis, Accounting, and Finance. Each student gains invaluable experience and brings fresh insights that help drive Optima’s mission to enrich the lives of seniors.
Simran shares her vision: “Optima offers a start-up-like environment where students work closely with directors and teams, make a tangible impact, and explore the immense possibilities within the seniors living industry. My goal is for Optima to be synonymous with senior living—where young talent can innovate and grow.”
With creative hiring strategies, including virtual pop-ups and enhanced job ads, Simran has built a program that allows students to dive deeply into meaningful work in a supportive, purpose-driven setting.
Meet Our Co-op Students
Here are just a couple of the talented individuals making a difference in our Co-op Program:
Hasneet Hehar - HR Co-op Student
Hasneet has embraced the opportunity to work across HR functions such as recruitment and compliance, developing a well-rounded skill set in the process. “Each project has taught me how essential every HR aspect is to Optima’s success,” she shared. This foundational experience has prepared her to take on future challenges in any HR setting with confidence and adaptability.
Roma Pawar - Project Management Co-op Student
Roma’s experience has confirmed her passion for project management within the seniors living industry. “Seeing how Optima’s purpose-driven work impacts residents’ lives has been deeply rewarding,” she said. Her mentorship experience at Optima has been transformative, equipping her with insights that will serve her well throughout her career.
Anikka Ramento – Marketing Assistant (former Co-Op Student)
Anikka joined Optima as a marketing co-op student and is now working as a Marketing Assistant. “Working at Optima Living is an incredibly rewarding experience. As a student, I was given ownership over my projects, surrounded by a supportive community, and worked with a talented marketing team. One project that stood out was spearheading the bi-annual market rent process, where I conducted competitive analysis and led strategy calls. This experience not only challenged me but also developed my analytical and leadership skills, which will be invaluable as I move forward in my marketing career. For anyone considering the program, I’d highly recommend it. It’s a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, work with supportive mentors, and make a meaningful impact.”
A Program Built for the Future
With plans to expand the Co-op Program into Alberta in 2025, Optima Living is committed to nurturing future leaders who are passionate about senior care. This program is a core part of our strategy to attract young talent, foster innovation in the industry, and introduce students to the rewarding opportunities within seniors living.
We are grateful to our Co-op students for their dedication, fresh perspectives, and contributions to our community. Together, we are building a brighter future in seniors living, one talented student at a time.
